Doctors Warn Against Unsafe Infant Sleep Practices

Doctors are warning parents that letting babies sleep on their stomachs ... or use pillows can increase the risk of suffocation and sleep-related death.
They stress the safest sleep environment is a separate crib with a firm mattress, no pillows or soft objects, and babies placed on their backs.
Doctors cited survey findings showing that while most parents understand safe sleep recommendations, nearly 30 percent struggle to follow them consistently.
They also cited Health Ministry's data from 2022 to 2023, which showed that around half of sleep-related deaths involving children under six were considered 'highly preventable'.
Experts say many parents still place pillows in cribs or choose stomach-sleeping positions because they believe babies sleep better that way or are concerned about head shape.
Child safety advocates are urging the government to strengthen public awareness ... and expand support programs for families with newborns.
