Hualien City residents will receive an emergency alert message on their mobile phones Monday morning as part of a large wave warning drill.
The Central Weather Administration will conduct the cell broadcast exercise on May 18th from 10 a.m. to noon, covering Hualien City.
The message will clearly indicate it is a disaster prevention drill test message from the CWA, in both Chinese and English, along with a contact number for questions.
The drill is designed to test the disaster prevention alert system used to warn coastal residents when waves of six meters or higher are forecast.
The Hualien County Fire Department says that when a real giant wave warning is issued in the future, coastal residents should stay away from the shoreline, and vessels at sea should move away from affected areas or seek shelter in a harbor immediately.
