Spain pushes ahead with tougher social media and AI rules
Posted on 2026-05-13 15:53:14
Spain says it will move forward with new rules to make social media and
artificial intelligence safer, despite heavy lobbying from major tech
companies.

Digital Transformation Minister Oscar Lopez says the measures would target
high-risk AI systems and force more transparency over how social media
algorithms work.

Spain is also pushing restrictions aimed at protecting minors, after earlier
plans to ban social media use by teenagers and hold platform executives
personally responsible for hate speech.

Lopez says the effort is driven by growing concern over cyberbullying, sexual
harassment, and AI-generated sexual deepfakes targeting children, especially
girls.

He says Spain wants a broader European approach, as the EU also prepares new
action against harmful and addictive platform design under its planned
Digital Fairness Act.

Spain has positioned itself as a strong supporter of what it calls
trustworthy AI, with rules aimed at protecting privacy, democracy, minors,
and public safety.
