Seismologists Warn of Aftershocks After Taitung Magnitude 5.6 Quake

Seismologists are warning that aftershocks of between magnitude 4 and 5 could
strike eastern Taiwan over the coming week ...

... following a magnitude 5-point-6 earthquake off the coast of Taitung
County this afternoon.

The quake hit just before 3 PM ... at almost 67 kilometers northeast of
Taitung County Hall ... at a depth of just under 23 kilometers ... and was
felt across much of Taiwan.

Experts say the shallow depth made the shaking more noticeable, especially in
eastern areas near the epicenter, with maximum intensity reaching level 4 in
Taitung and Hualien counties.

Seismologists say the quake appears to be an isolated event, though residents
are still being advised to remain cautious.

Historical records show the area is prone to earthquakes, with 25 quakes
above magnitude 5-point-5 recorded within 30 kilometers of the epicenter
since 1980.
