Protests in Nantou's Mingjian township have continued today, with protesters being stopped by police after climbing over barriers separating panelists from the public.
Nantou County is Taiwan's only municipality without its own incinerator, and has in the past been forced to rely on neighbors for help.
But as those neighboring municipalities have no longer been able to help, and trash continues to accumulate, the county government is looking to build its own incinerator.
The plan has encountered opposition from local residents, who've raised concerns about how an incinerator would affect the township's tea industry, which employees one third of residents.
At today's meeting, residents asked the county government if they "had ever asked Mingjian people if the incincerator should be built there" and called for the head of the environmental department to be removed.
