The Ministry of Foreign Affairs says, the U.S. is hoping that Taiwan will increase military spending from just the 780 billion NT special budget passed by the legislature on Friday.
Minister Lin Chia-lung said the U.S. is hoping that the legislature will- in his words- "rectify" the situation.
In particular, the minister added, the U.S. side was unhappy with the KMT/TPP version of the defense bill's complete exclusion of commercial procurement and commissioned projects.
Lin emphasized that Washington hoped that Taiwan would do more to support the defense budget, particularly given its position in the liminal island chain.
Meanwhile premier Zhuo Rong Tai said the government would certainly take action to bring back the public's and international partners' trust in Taiwan.
