The Ministry of Health and Welfare is marking Taiwan No Alcohol Day today by urging families of people with alcohol dependency to seek professional help.
The ministry says 49 percent of callers to its alcohol addiction consultation services are family members, not the individuals with drinking problems.
Officials say alcohol dependency is treatable, and that quitting can relieve related conditions such as depression and anxiety.
The ministry offers a subsidy program covering up to 40-thousand NT per person per year for alcohol addiction treatment, including outpatient care, medication, and psychological and family therapy.
More than 4-thousand people benefited from the program this year alone.
Ministry data show that nearly 90 percent of patients who receive treatment reduce their drinking frequency or amount.
