The Internal Administration Committee of the Legislative Yuan has passed the second reading of amendments to voting laws...
which would lower the voting age to 18 for elections and recalls.
At present, 18 and 19 year olds can only vote in referendums.
Although the committee itself has passed the amendments, they are still pending interpretation by the Consitutional Court.
As a result, a supplomentary resolution was passed requesting the Legislature's Constitutional Amendment Committee to initiate the process of amending the constitution.
Officials say, if the change were to be made, it would add another 410,000 voters to the rolls, which would be likely to affect polling stations and elective procedures.
As for this November's election, election announcements will be made in mid August.
If the law is amended after August 20th, the old law will still apply, and 18 and 19 year olds will not be able to vote this year.
