New Taipei has identified high-risk rodent infestation zones across the city and is stepping up prevention efforts.
The city's Environmental Protection Department says the nearly 2-thousand-600 hotspots identified include flood-prone areas, vacant lots and buildings, and sites where recyclable materials accumulate.
Officials say they are focusing on environmental management, by eliminating food sources and shelter, and chemical rodenticide use will be a secondary measure.
Outdoor bait stations are enclosed and labeled with warning signs, and residents who request rodenticides for home use will be given safety guidelines before receiving the product.
The city says it has no data indicating a rise in rat populations, and the list of high-risk zones will be reviewed on a rolling basis.
