NYCU team develops glowing material inspired by Matsu's "blue tears"

Researchers at National Yang Ming Chiao Tung University have developed a new luminescent material inspired by the famous "blue tears" of Matsu.
The blue tears are caused by single-celled organisms that emit fluorescence when agitated by ocean waves.
A graduate student accidentally discovered that a soft silicone material emits blue fluorescence when compressed or stretched, reminding the team of the natural phenomenon.
The material also generates circularly polarized light, seen as a key technology for next-generation 3D displays that would not require glasses.
Researchers say it could also reduce power consumption and allow for thinner, lighter devices.
The findings were developed in collaboration with Osaka Institute of Technology in Japan and published in an international academic journal.
