Hualien brings the hammer down on litterers with the help of smart tech

The Hualien County Environmental Protection Department says that a new program designed to collect hard evidence of littering has been extremely successful in punishing perpetrators.
Littering in the county currently incurs a fine of up to 6000 NT with the help of new technology.
Officials explain that a new mobile surveillance system helps to provide concrete evidence of littering to authorities and will attempt to curb the habit.
Environmental officials note that some instances of littering take place in very rural areas where there may be no witnesses.
But now, the new tech has been introduced to monitor areas known to be littering hotspots, making investigations into littering significantly more efficient.
Officials say they plan to continue to expand the program and they encourage the public to report instances to authorities while including video evidence.
