Taiwan's economy grew at its fastest quarterly pace in nearly 39 years in the first quarter of this year, driven by surging demand for artificial intelligence.
The Directorate-General of Budget, Accounting and Statistics says preliminary data puts first-quarter growth at 13-point-69 percent, up 2-point-23 percentage points from its February forecast.
The agency says strong demand for A-I, high-performance computing, and cloud infrastructure -- along with mass production of next-generation products -- drove a sharp expansion in electronics and I-C-T exports.
Robust demand for emerging technologies also helped sustain business investment.
Private consumption also beat expectations, supported by a government cash handout program and a wealth effect from record stock market highs.
