Myanmar junta shortens Suu Kyi sentence in Buddhist holiday pardon
Posted on 2026-04-30 18:15:14
Myanmar’s military-backed government shortened the prison sentence of ousted
leader Aung San Suu Kyi.

The move Thursday came as part of a prisoner pardon tied to a Buddhist
religious holiday.

The amnesty is the second in two weeks, and comes after Senior General Min
Aung Hlaing was sworn into office as president on April 10.

Two legal officials have said Thursday’s measure would further reduce Suu
Kyi’s remaining sentence by one-sixth.

Based on previous reductions, she is expected to have more than 13 years left
to serve.
