Taipei Zoo is marking Save the Frogs Day today by announcing it has bred at least 2-thousand critically endangered species of music frog.
The juvenile "Nidi-rana shyh-huang-i" is only found only in two wetland sites in Nantou County ... those are Lianhuachi (蓮華池) and Sun Moon Lake in Yuchi (魚池) Township.
It has an estimated wild population of just 300 to 700 adults.
Taipei Zoo says it began its breeding program in 2022 in partnership with the Ministry of Agriculture, developing techniques to replicate the species' unique mud-nest building behavior in captivity.
The species was formally recognized as distinct from the Yaeyama Music Frog in February 2025 ... and named after the professor who first identified it in 1984: Chen Shyh-huang (陳世煌).
