MOA: US Peanut Imports Limited Affect on Domestic Producers
Posted on 2026-04-28 17:23:13
The Ministry of Agriculture says the government will help domestic peanut farmers adapt if American peanuts enter the local market tariff-free.
Deputy Agriculture Minister Hu Chung-yi said today that if the Taiwan-US reciprocal trade agreement gains legislative approval and is implemented ...
... he estimates the agreement would affect between 20 and 30 percent of domestically produced peanuts.
But Hu noted that about 70 percent of domestic peanuts go to food processors, who generally prefer fresh unshelled peanuts for their flavor and texture.
The deputy minister points out that Taiwan has developed improved peanut varieties, and has been building consolidated production zones.
Hu also says the ministry is building automated drying centers to reduce the burden on farmers who currently dry their harvests outdoors.
