Premier rejects KMT proposal to connect Kinmen to China's power grid

Premier Cho Jung-tai has pushed back against a proposal to link Kinmen's power supply to China's grid, saying current law does not allow it and that existing supply to the outlying islands is sufficient.
The proposal came from K-M-T legislator Chen Yu-chen (陳玉珍) during legislative questioning today, who argued the move could save up to 3-billion NT per year.
Cho warned that this is not a question of cost savings, and that a single lapse in energy security could have serious consequences.
The exchange touched on broader cross-strait connectivity proposals for Kinmen, including water, electricity, a bridge, and natural gas, following ten Taiwan-related measures announced by Beijing earlier this month.
Cho noted the water connection is already in operation but said remaining proposals require local consultation and must prioritize national security.
He asked the Ministry of Economic Affairs to study expanding renewable energy options on Kinmen to reduce dependence on fuel-based generation.
