Driver Assist System Faulted in Deadly Freeway Crash
Posted on 2026-04-27 18:13:13
The Taiwan Transportation Safety Board says that 'advanced driving
assistance' may have been a contributing factor in a fatal crash on National
Freeway 1 last year.

The board says that the system likely failed to detect lane markings before
shutting off, causing the vehicle to veer off course.

Investigators say the driver, who may have been relying on the system, did
not react in time to correct the steering or apply the brakes.

The crash, which occurred at the Yangmei Rest Area, left four people dead and
four others injured after the vehicle hit a divider caught fire.

Officials are now calling on the Ministry of Transportation and
Communications to accelerate the introduction of road safety inspection
mechanisms and expand ADAS safety education, particularly for rental car
users.

The board also recommends that rental car companies better inform drivers
about how to safely use these systems and understand their limitations.
