Bills passed to scrap amusement taxes for cinemas, live performances

The Legislative Yuan has passed amendments to scrap amusement taxes on cinemas, live performances and sporting events.
The move removes taxes previously charged on tickets, which had ranged from up to 10 percent for sports to as high as 60 percent for movie theaters.
Under the new rules, cinemas, concerts, dance shows and other live entertainment will no longer be subject to the tax.
Officials say the changes are aimed at encouraging greater public participation in cultural and sporting activities.
Some venues, including dance halls and golf courses, will still face reduced or limited taxes, though local governments may choose to suspend them.
The amendments were proposed by the Cabinet last year and received cross-party support in the Legislature ... completing a preliminary examination of the bill.
