The K-M-T is describing the cancellation of President Lai Ching-te's planned visit to Eswatini as being "deeply regrettable," and is calling on Beijing to exercise restraint, "reduce its suppression," and give the Republic of China government diplomatic space.
According to K-M-T Culture and Communications Committee Director Yin Nai-ching, the cancellation of Lai's Eswatini trip was "not connected" to the meeting earlier this month in Beijing between K-M-T Chairwoman Cheng Li-wun and Xi Jinping.
While Taiwan People's Party has slammed China for allegedly forcing the cancellation of Lai trip.
The party says if Beijing continues to "aggressively constrict Taiwan's diplomatic space and intimidate the Taiwanese people," it will only exacerbate tensions in the Taiwan Strait and push the Taiwanese people farther away."
The statements came after Presidential Office Secretary-General Pan Men-an announced that Lai had been forced to cancel the visit, due to what he described as "economic coercion" by China.
Pan told reporters that the Seychelles, Mauritius, and Madagascar "unexpectedly and without justification rescinded overflight permission."
Those three countries are located along the flight path of the chartered plane that Lai, his delegation and members of his national security team were scheduled to take to Eswatini.
