Taiwan's three major carriers have announced sharp increases in cargo fuel surcharges starting in early May.
China Airlines says that starting May 1st, cargo fuel surcharges for shipments to Europe and the United States will rise from 41 to 81 NT per kilogram, and from 14 to 28 NT within Asia.
While EVA Air and STARLUX Airlines say that on May 2nd they will implement the same rates.
Industry analysts say the increases will push overall air freight costs above 300 NT per kilogram on some routes.
The price hike is expected to trigger a rush of shipments before the new rates take effect, with demand for cargo space likely to spike in late April.
