The pet cat population has surpassed pet dogs for the first time, according to a new government survey.
The Ministry of Agriculture says the country now has an estimated one-million-740-thousand cats, up nearly 33 percent from two years ago...
...while the pet dog population edged down slightly to one-million-460-thousand.
The Ministry says the shift reflects growing numbers of single-person households in cities, where smaller living spaces make cats a more practical choice.
More people are also keeping multiple cats, which has driven the overall count higher.
On the regulatory side, pet cat registration becomes mandatory starting January 1st of next year, but the Ministry says many owners are still unaware of the requirement.
