Taitung Targets 60% Energy Self-Sufficiency by 2030

Taitung County says it aims to generate 60 percent of its own electricity by
2030 through renewable energy.

Officials say the county is developing small-scale hydropower and geothermal
energy as part of a microgrid system.

There are currently six small hydro plants — with four already in operation.

There's also four geothermal facilities, including one running and three
under construction.

Together, they are expected to produce around 600 million kilowatt-hours a
year — about 60 percent of the county's electricity use.

Taitung currently relies entirely on power transmitted from western Taiwan,
meaning a major disruption could lead to widespread outages.

Officials say expanding local energy production will improve resilience and
reduce dependence on external supply.

They add the projects have low environmental impact, while also supporting
local communities.
