Taiwan's main opposition leader Cheng Li-wun of the KMT met with Chinese President Xi Jinping earlier today at Beijing's Great Hall of the People, the first such encounter in over a decade.
Cheng described the atmosphere of the talks as positive and friendly, saying that both sides have affirmed the need for maintaining peace across the Taiwan Strait.
They have also said they would uphold the 1992 Consensus and opposed Taiwan's independence, as well as move toward closer ties.
The meeting started at around 11 AM and lasted an hour behind closed doors, and it was followed by a lunch with Xi as the host.
At a news conference this afternoon, Cheng said she made it clear at the meeting that both sides can work together in preserving shared history, promoting Chinese culture, and boosting people’s well-being through cooperation.

Cheng said she's also proposed to Xi that Taiwan and China should resume dialogue mechanisms, expand mutually beneficial exchanges and increase Taiwan’s international participation.
