KMT chair Cheng Li-wen's visit to Dr. Sun Yat-sen's mausoleum
Posted on 2026-04-08 18:24:14
KMT Chair Cheng Li-wen paid respects to Dr. Sun Yat-sen's Mausoleum in
Nan-jing this morning, using the occasion to highlight history, identity, and
cross-strait ties.

Speaking to a large group of reporters after the visit, Cheng said news of
Sun Yat-sen’s death in 1925 had once brought deep grief to people in Taiwan,
citing historical writings that described island-wide mourning.

She stressed Sun’s global legacy, noting that he not only overthrew the Qing
Dynasty but also founded the first democratic country in Asia, the Republic
of China.

The KMT chairwoman also described her visit as the foundation for renewed
cross-strait dialogue under the “1992 Consensus.”

Local cable TV news footage showed that she drew large crowds at the
mausoleum, with some local residents lining up before dawn for a chance to
see her.

Cheng and the delegation have returned to Shanghai and will meet the city's
leaders at a banquet tonight.
