HPA Sets Initial Guidelines for Outdoor Smoking Areas
Posted on 2026-04-08 18:24:14
The Health Promotion Administration says it has reached a preliminary
consensus on national guidelines for outdoor smoking areas.

Officials say future smoking zones should be located away from building
entrances and main walkways, with proper height and good ventilation.

The goal is to prevent smoke from directly dispersing toward crowded public
spaces and reduce exposure to secondhand smoke.

Currently, while indoor smoking is banned, outdoor smoking is not clearly
regulated and enforcement remains limited.

In a HPA survey from 2024, almost half of respondents reported secondhand
smoke exposure in places like sidewalks and arcades.

Authorities say the proposed standards draw on international practices,
favoring open, non-enclosed designs placed away from high-traffic areas.

The agency adds that local governments will still have flexibility in
planning.
