Man on run for 18 years arrested following suspected illegal boat entry

A Taiwanese fugitive who had been on the run in China for 18 years has been
arrested after allegedly sneaking back into Taiwan by boat.

Authorities say the man, surnamed Lee, was detained in Keelung for suspected
immigration violations.

Investigators found he had fled Taiwan nearly two decades ago after being
wanted in a firearms modification case.

The Coast Guard says a suspicious vessel was first detected off Tainan in
late March, with an abandoned motorboat later found onshore.

Officials then launched a search operation and alerted police to step up
coastal patrols.

Lee was eventually tracked down and arrested days later in northern Taiwan.

The case is now under investigation, with evidence handed to prosecutors.

His original criminal case will also be reopened after nearly 18 years.
