Police are on standby at the Chongde Checkpoint in Hualien on the Suhua Corridor to implement traffic control measures if northbound traffic becomes too heavy.
They say that if hourly traffic exceeds 1,000 vehicles, authorities will activate an alternating single-lane release system to ease congestion.
Highway officials say more than ten thousand vehicles are expected on the roadway this afternoon ... on the final day of the Tomb Sweeping holiday.
Traffic began building yesterday, with more than fourteen thousand vehicles recorded heading north, and volumes continuing to climb through this morning.
At noon, traffic flow was about 900 vehicles per hour, remaining below the control threshold.
Meanwhile, further north ...
The northbound stretch on National Freeway 5 between Yilan and Toucheng ... is still heavily congested ... with traffic speeds well under 20 kilometers per hour -- the slowest nationwide.
Authorities warn the congestion on this section could last until after 10 PM.
