Taiwan lists Nipah virus as Category 5 disease
Posted on 2026-04-02 20:28:13
The Centers for Disease Control has officially designated Nipah virus as a
Category 5 notifiable disease ...

... requiring suspected cases to be reported within 24 hours.

Officials say the move reflects ongoing outbreaks overseas, as well as the
virus's high fatality rate and transmission risks.

Health authorities say the new classification aims to strengthen early
detection, improve public awareness, and ensure a rapid response.

Although no cases have been recorded in Taiwan, strict measures are now in
place.

Suspected patients must be isolated, and doctors are required to report cases
promptly through the national system.

Nipah virus is a zoonotic disease, spread through contact with infected
animals, contaminated food, or close human contact.

Globally, more than 750 cases have been reported since 1998, with fatality
rates as high as 75 percent.

There are currently no approved vaccines or treatments.
