TGBAS Raises Concerns Over Opposition's 'Future Account' Plan

Taiwan's top statistical office is raising concerns about the Future Account
proposal by opposition parties.

That's the plan requiring the government to deposit 50 thousand NT into
accounts for children under 12, with annual contributions of 10 thousand NT.

The Directorate-General of Budget, Accounting and Statistics warns the
program could cost up to $450 billion NT over a 13-year period ...

... and notes that it lacks income-based eligibility.

The office argues that by giving the same amount to everyone, the plan fails
to prioritize families in the greatest financial need.

Officials also caution that dedicating all future budget surpluses to the
program could reduce fiscal flexibility ...

... and limit the government's ability to respond to changing economic
conditions and policy priorities.

The proposal is currently under legislative review.
