A Nantou county environmental impact assessment meeting today again
encountered stiff opposition from opponents of the proposed Mingjian Township
incinerator project.

Critics from Nantou and other cities and counties turned up to today's
meeting to protest the proposal.

Opponents say that the incinerator should be built in a more populated
township for ease of transportation to and from the facility.

They also slammed the county government, saying that the proposed placement
in Mingjian was a unilateral decision and that residents were against the
proposal.

Local officials are at odds with the county government, accusing the Nantou
government of intentionally holding the meeting far from Mingjian despite
repeated complaints...

although county officials say that Mingjian lacks a suitable meeting venue.

Critics have also raised concerns about the impact on Mingjian's tea industry
and the endangered leopard cat.
