Environmental officials say river pollution in Taiwan has hit a record low as the government prepares to test hundreds of water treatment plants for chemicals.
The Ministry of Environment says only two out of 293 monitoring stations recorded severe pollution last year.
This is a significant drop from the 66 stations reported in 2002.
Officials say the total length of severely polluted river segments has also decreased from 14-percent to less than 2-percent over the same period.
The government aims to have zero severely polluted stations by 2030.
And as part of a new safety push, officials will test approximately 400 water treatment plants across the country this year.
Inspectors will look for pollutants such as plasticizers and boron.
The ministry says it is also studying the risks of microplastics in the water supply.
