A restorative justice program in Brazil promoting reading is allowing prisoners to shave time off their sentences.
Inmates in a women's prison in Rio de Janeiro can sign up for the program to immerse themselves in literary works and prove they understood the contents.
Prisoners say that reading offers a form of escapism to think about things outside the jail cell.
Brazil has one of the highest per capita incarceration rates in Latin America...
and boasts one of the most formalized and nationwide systems for sentence reduction through reading in the world.
Even former president Jair Bolsonaro has been authorized to take part.
And if you need any book recommendations, some of the books that detainees read include Crime and Punishment by Fyodor Dostoevsky and The Color Purple by Alice Walker.
