Experts say, the sentence handed down to former Taipei Mayor and TPP Founder Ke Wen Zhe may strengthen the alliance between the TPP and KMT heading into November elections.
A retired NTNU political science professor, Chu Chao-hsiang 曲兆祥 noted that many TPP supporters viewed the ruling as unfair...
which is likely to deepen resentment towards the DPP and translate into support for the proposed TPP-KMT cooperation and boosting the smaller party's prospects in local elections.
Meanwhile Chen Shih-min 陳世民, of the NTU political science department, said the the TPP would move to frame the case as political persecution, with supporters likely to believe Ke is innocent.
But, Chen said it may hurt the party and make it more difficult to attract moderate voters.
Chen noted that recent data shows that the TPP's support has dropped by about 10 percentage points over the past year.
