Taiwan will send Mandarin teachers to Tibetan schools in India under a new agreement between a Tibetan higher education institute and a local Taiwan representative office.
Diplomats say that, under the agreement, Taiwanese teachers will be placed in Tibetan schools to teach Mandarin, creating more opportunities for cultural exchange and mutual understanding.
This marks the first formal collaboration in higher education between Taiwan and the Tibetan community in India.
Representatives from the Dalai Lama Institute for Higher Education in Bangalore say that the school has long offered Mandarin courses, but they've mostly been taught by Tibetan teachers.
Tibetan officials say that learning Mandarin will expand job opportunities for Tibetan students and allow Tibetans to better express themselves to Mandarin-speaking audiences as they confront China and fight for a free Tibet.
