Nutritionists in Taiwan warn that alcohol can help people fall asleep, but might disrupt sleep quality.
They say alcohol reduces deep sleep ... and warn it can actually wake people during early hours — leading to fragmented sleep and reduced overnight recovery.
Alcohol increases the risk of sleep apnea by relaxing airway muscles, and may lead to low blood sugar during the night — in severe cases causing dizziness, sweating or even unconsciousness.
Instead of drinking, nutritionists suggest improving sleep through diet, including nutrients like calcium and magnesium to help regulate the nervous system and support deeper sleep.
They add that avoiding alcohol altogether remains the best option for overall health, noting no level of alcohol consumption is completely risk-free.
