DPP Seeks Candidate for Taipei Mayor Race

The ruling DPP is stepping up efforts to choose its candidate for the Taipei
mayoral race.

Party Secretary-General Xu Guo-yong met Taipei party officials today to
gather views on the 2026 election.

Most DPP lawmakers and local officials named Vice Premier Zheng Li-jun
(鄭麗君) as their top choice, who over the past several months led Taiwan's
trade negotiation with the United States.

They also urged the party to speed up the nomination process to next month as
other cities move ahead.

However, officials said the decision depends on Zheng's willingness and
progress in tariff negotiations.

Other names discussed included lawmakers Wang Shi-Jian and Puma Shen and
Forward Alliance Founder Enoch Wu.

If Zheng declines, some see Wang as a strong alternative candidate, an idea
that Wang has resisted.
