National Defense Minister declined to set a date for prototype submarine
Posted on 2026-03-20 14:06:14
The Defense Minister has declined to set a date for the delivery of Taiwan's
first indigenous submarine, the Hai-kun.

The original plan was for it to be delivered to the Navy in June.

Wellington Koo said today that his Ministry will proceed step by step, and
will only move forward with delivery after all testing has been fully
completed under safe conditions.

His comments come after President Lai Ching-te boarded the vessel for the
first time yesterday and inspected its interior.

The Hai-kun successfully conducted its 6th sea trial dive on the 12th.

Koo stressed that that all test items for the submarine prototype, whether
shallow-water or deep-water dives, must be fully completed and verified under
safe conditions.

He said only after all testing is complete will the submarine be delivered,
and no specific delivery date will be set in advance.
