KMT Chair Zheng Li-wen says the DPP is taking rumors of a planned meeting between her and Chinese President Xi Jinping to new levels of absurdity.
After the DPP said that opposition lawmakers have refused to consider the Cabinet's special defense bill next week because they don't want to imperil a meeting between Zheng and Xi, Zheng said this is only the latest DPP fantasy of a such a meeting.
She said that if the DPP would simply accept the so-called 1992 consensus and forsake its QUOTE "useless" pro-independence platform, there's every chance that there would be a meeting between President Lai Ching-te and Xi Jinping before she ever meets the Chinese Communist Party chairman.
The 1992 consensus refers to the notion that KMT and CCP leaders in 1992 agreed to continue discussions on the basis that each side could have its own interpretation of what "China" is. This consensus was never really achieved in 1992. Moreover, the DPP's position is that it's a trap that forces acceptance of Beijing's "one-China" principle, thus undermining Taiwan's sovereignty.
