Toronto Maple Leafs captain Auston Matthews will miss the rest of the NHL season due to a knee injury sustained against the Anaheim Ducks.
Matthews was knocked out of a game after Anaheim defenseman Radko Gudas kneed him.
The Leafs said Matthews has a Grade 3 MCL tear and a bruised quadriceps.
Gudas was suspended for five games after a hearing with the league's Department of Player Safety. It was the maximum penalty allowable under the circumstances. Matthews' agent expressed disappointment and shock over the mildness of the ruling.
Gudas is the Czech player who ended Canadian captain Sidney Crosby's Olympics in quarterfinal play.
