280 political parties register for Haitian general election

Nowturning to international news

A record 280 political parties have registered to particiapte in Haiti's
first general election in 10 years.

Not all of them will make the cut, but newcomers nonetheless rejoiced.

Some hope it will be a chance to ease multiple ongoing crises in the country
that are largely rooted in gang violence and corruption.

Haitian government officials originally said that they expected to hold
elections in August and a runoff in December...

but the prime minister has since said that the first round will be held by
the end of the year.

Many douby that will happen, given persistent gang violence.

UN statistics show more than 5,900 people were reported killed last year
across Haiti and more than 2,700 injured.
