A new poll has shown decreased trust in the US... and suggests that trust in the US is often linked to political party affiliation in Taiwan.
The Academia Sinica study shows that only 34% of the Taiwanese public see the US as a trustworthy country, representing an 11% drop from just 5 years ago.
The poll also reveals that 60% of DPP supporters see the US as a country that keeps its promises, while only 10% of those who tend to side with the KMT saw the US in that positive light.
The data shows that trust in the US began declining amonst the Taiwanese public in 2024.
Scholars also note that the proportion of Taiwanese people who agree that China is a trustworthy country has risen since last year to 17%.
Further, scholars say that DPP supporters were more likely to believe that the US would defend Taiwan in the event of a Chinese attack.
