Deputy Legislative Speaker Johnny Chiang of the opposition KMT met former Australian Prime Minister Malcolm Turnbull yesterday during a visit to Australia.
According to a statement released today, Turnbull welcomed Chiang and voiced support for Chiang's "3D" principles — deterrence, dialogue and democracy — as a framework for maintaining regional peace and stability.
Turnbull also agreed that maintaining communication can help reduce misunderstandings and ease tensions.
Chiang said Taiwan and Australia should pursue a more comprehensive partnership, noting the complementary nature of Taiwan's semiconductor industry and Australia’s mineral and agricultural resources.
He also asked Turnbull to support Taiwan’s bid to join the Comprehensive and Progressive Agreement for Trans-Pacific Partnership.
Chiang later visited the United States Studies Centre at the University of Sydney during his trip, which also included events with overseas Taiwanese business groups.
