The Food and Drug Administration has blocked a 560-kilogram shipment of paper potato chip containers from the Philippines after they tested positive for banned chemicals.
The containers were found to contain optical brighteners, a prohibited substance under under Taiwan's Sanitation Standards for Food Utensils, Containers and Packages.
As a result, the Taipei-based importer now faces intensified scrutiny, with inspection rates hiked to as much as 50 percent for future shipments.
The FDA also reported 13 other failed imports this week, including South Korean citrus and Chinese red dates.
The dates were found to contain excessive pesticide residues, including the banned chemical dichlorvos.
All non-compliant goods will be returned or destroyed.
