Taiwan Population Decline Continues for 26th Month

Taiwan has just recorded its lowest number of monthly births on record.
New figures from the Ministry of the Interior show that only 6,523 babies were born in February — the first time the monthly total has fallen below seven thousand since records began.
That was about 2,200 fewer births than in January — a drop of roughly 25 percent — and nearly 3,900 fewer than in the same month last year.
Meanwhile, deaths outnumbered births by more than 8,300.
The figures come as Taiwan’s overall population continues to shrink.
The Ministry says the population stood at 23,280,273 at the end of February, marking the 26th consecutive month of population decline.
Regionally, the lowest birth rates were recorded in Keelung, Tainan, and Lienchiang County, while Penghu, Taitung, and Hualien reported the highest.
