NGOs urge halt of EIA for Mingjian incinerator

Local environmental groups are urging a halt to an environmental impact
assessment for a proposed incinerator in Nantou's Mingjian.

The incinerator proposal has attracted plenty of criticism since being
proposed last year, due to its proposed location in the tea producing
township.

Government Watch Alliance today raised concerns about the potential pollution
of drinking water, and called for the county government to choose a new
location for the incinerator before doing a second-round environmental impact
assessment.

Nantou currently lacks its own incinerator, forcing it to rely on neighboring
cities and counties.

But the incinerator proposal has been highly contentious for both
environmental concerns and the local government's handling of the issue.
