Doctors in Taiwan say that as little as ten minutes of exercise five days per week may be enough to help people slim down.
They pointed to research published in the Journal of Obesity and Metabolic Syndrome, which followed 26 young women who were overweight or obese and did not usually exercise.
Participants in the exercise group performed short high-intensity workouts five days a week, including brief stair-climbing sprints after a short warm-up.
After four weeks, the group lost an average of about 1.3 kilograms, while waistlines shrank by roughly one and a half centimeters and cardiovascular fitness improved.
Doctors say stair climbing is an efficient full-body workout that can easily be added to daily routines, such as taking the stairs during a commute.
They also recommend combining exercise with balanced eating habits for better long-term weight control.
