CK Hutchison seeks US$2 billion in damages over Panama ports' takeover

A subsidiary of a Hong Kong-based company that has lost control of two ports on the Panama Canal says it's seeking $2 billion of compensation from Panama over its "illegal" takeover of the ports.
Panama Ports Company, a unit of Hong Kong's CK Hutchison Holdings, is demanding the sum under international arbitration proceedings.
Panama's government last week seized control of the Balboa and Cristobal ports on each end of the Panama Canal, after the country's Supreme Court declared earlier that a concession allowing the company to run the ports was unconstitutional.
Panama's move appears to stem from criticism of the ports by US President Trump last year, when he claimed that China was "running the ports." CK Hutchison tried to sell its controlling stake in the operations, but Beijing intervened, calling the sale "kowtowing" to the United States.
