Foreign representative offices in Taipei are sending messages to acknowledge Taiwan's progress since the 1947 incident that led to the national holiday marked today -- 228 Peace Memorial Day.
The British Office in Taipei noted the similarity of Britain's Remembrance Day slogan "Lest we forget" and the Taiwanese expression "M'thang buei gi," which translates as "never forget." The British office notes that this day is also about reflecting on Taiwan's journey to peace and democracy.
The German Insititute in Taipei emphasized the importance of democracy in avoiding similar incidents from occuring in the future. It also noted that democracies like Germany and Taiwan have an obligation to redress grievances created during their authoritarian pasts.
