The Consumers’ Foundation says some towing operators are engaging what it described as "exploitation enabled by regulatory neglect," and is urging the government to set clear fee standards.
The comments follow one netizen's social media post saying a private towing company charged him $100-thousand NT to tow the car from New Taipei's Wu-lai to Xin-dian.
Another person complained that he was charged 50,000 NT to tow his motorcycle just two kilometers.
The Foundation says when a vehicle breaks down or an accident occurs, it should be a moment when the social safety network comes into play.
However, for some operators, it has become the perfect opportunity to take advantage of the situation and demand inflated prices.
Noting that Taiwan currently only has standardized roadside assistance fee regulations for highways and expressways, the Foundation says there should be rules for regular roads, parking lots, and suburban or mountainous areas as well.
Taipei Mayor Chiang Wan-an has also weighed in on the issue, saying that he's directed the Transport Department and the Legal Affairs Department to publicize guidelines for towing operators to follow.
