Man paid fines for trying to smuggle gold out
Posted on 2026-02-25 18:08:15
A man has paid a little over 3 million NT in fines to retrieve his 1.5
kilograms of gold.

According to the Administrative Enforcement Agency, the man was caught in
April 2024 attempting to leave the country with the 3 undeclared gold bars.

Taipei Customs confiscated the gold and imposed a fine of $3.01 million NT,
equivalent to the gold’s value at the time.

It far exceeded the legal declaration threshold of $20-thousand U.S. dollars,
or 626-thousand NT.

After he failed to pay the fine by the deadline, the Tao-yuan branch of the
A-E-A announced that the gold would be auctioned on March 3rd.

Upon learning this, the man immediately paid the fine in full and was able to
keep the gold, which is now worth some 7.9 million NT.
